About tricks section...

Post by fx »

I next few days I'll add all old tricks and upload video samples, feels free to add more tricks here for Doom, Doom 2, Plutonia and TNT for the start, later we can move to others.

Please provide details:
- who invented the trick or when it was first used
- first demo and link to demo
- "skills" needed to do the trick, not sure how to qualify this as some players can't even wallrun, maybe we should skip this?
- how to perform the trick with detail explanation
- video is not needed as we will upload it to our channel, but if there is no demo of trick feel free to record one in ANY vanilla compatibile engine and send to tricks@doom.com.hr

Example:
Discovered by: X Y
Demo: demo.zip
Skills needed: strafe50 skills
Difficulty: easy
Description: bla bla bla

Tricks page (will have options to pick game):

Very nice to have a place to refer to for the tricks in doom.

Here's a list of tricks for plutonia that I know of, some of the tricks are only done in the TAS by Alexander Nikulin (A.N.)
There is also a demo called 15plx723 by Sedlo, I haven't been able to play it back since it requires
some MBF-compatible ports that I can't be bothered to look for, so I am not certain who discovered some of the tricks.
I have not found out who discovered some of the tricks, I have included some info for you in
the brackets (...) regarding that, all brackets should be removed, feel free to change anything else as well.

Some tricks are very very difficult if you have never done them before,
but can be quite easy if you've practiced them. Other tricks are difficult
no matter how much you practice them, so I have assumed skills needed are met
for setting the difficulty of the tricks:

Some tricks are time consuming, dangerous or difficult to get correctly, so roughly:
Easy tricks should be neither if you have the skills required.
Medium tricks are expected to be either a bit time consuming or a bit dangerous.
Hard tricks are expected to be time consuming or dangerous or both.
Then very\extremely hard for tricks that are difficult to get without TAS.

For skills needed, I have considered precise SR50 as being able to hit
move forward, strafe direction and turn direction at the same time.
Standard gliding skills as in you've done a west to east directed glide before
Advanced gliding skills as in you've done a north to south directed glide before
Timing as in you are able to say shoot a rocket at the correct time.

I also made a demo for map25, and some other demos that I haven't submitted to cndoom database yet:

Final Doom: The Plutonia Experiment, Tricks:

Map 1 - SR50 trick
Discovered by: Anders (according to pl01-023)
Demo: pl01-023
Skills needed: Precise SR50
Difficulty: Medium\hard
Description: Skips having to grab any keys and thus skips most of the map.
The room contains 4 chaingunners and 3 mancubi, leaving everything alive makes it a very hard trick.
With just the mancubi alive it could be difficult to hit the exit trigger before they kill you.
Requires correct setup, medium difficulty assumes no monsters.

Map 3 - Glide
Discovered by: Alexander Nikulin (I have only seen this in A.N.'s 30pl1316\30pl1337,
all UV\speed and nomo runs doesn't use the trick, I even saved 4 seconds on the nomo time on first attempt,
perhaps I should make a UV-speed demo myself if none exists.)
Demo: 30pl1316
Skills needed: Standard\advanced gliding skills
Difficulty: Hard
Description: Skips having to grab red key
This glide is different from standard glides, it is not a guideless glide and not a normal guided glide.
For this particular glide you don't need an exact angle, it is also in the north to south direction.

Map 5 - Glide
Discovered by: ??? (This trick is rather pointless, probably only useful in TAS, so I assume A.N. or Sedlo discovered it)
Demo: 30pl1316
Skills needed: Standard gliding skills
Difficulty: Medium
Description: Skips baron, saves very little time if done instant.

Map 6 - Rocket Jump
Discovered by: ??? (Sedlo?)
Demo: 30pl1316 or pl06o045 (DSDA)
Skills needed:
Difficulty: Very hard
Description: Quicker route to red key, very dangerous. Teleporters make it more difficult and there are revenants in the way.
Probably only useful in TAS run, though in episode\movie run could be useful if you have a lot of health and have practiced it.

Map 7 - SR50 trick
Discovered by: Daniel "Demonlord" Lindgren (according to pl07-030.txt)
Demo: pl07-030 or pl07-020
Skills needed: Strafing skills
Difficulty: Easy
Description: Skips half the map.
After clearing out the mancubi an elevator lowers, it is possible to run to the other side using SR50.
It is also possible without SR50 if you don't wait for the elevator to go all the way down.

Map 7 - Fence Glide
Discovered by: Sedlo (according to pl07-020.txt)
Demo: pl07-020
Skills needed: Luck?
Difficulty: Hard\Very hard
Description: Glide through the fence into the exit area. This glide only skips having to wait for the door to lower,
so haven't spent time to find if a consistent method exists, hence I assume it could be luck based.

Map 8 - Glide
Discovered by: Grazza (according to pl08p019.txt)
Demo: pl08p019
Skills needed: Standard gliding skills
Difficulty: Hard
Description: West to east guideless glide, skips a large section of the map.

Map 9 - Glide
Discovered by: Alexander Nikulin (according to 30pl1337.txt)
Demo: 30pl1316 or pl09-045
Skills needed: Advanced gliding skills
Difficulty: Very hard
Description: North to south guideless glide, skips grabbing yellow and blue key.

Map 10 - Key skip
Discovered by: ??? (Kai-Uwe Humpert? earliest demo with this trick,1997)
Demo: PL10-026 or pl10-019
Skills needed: Good strafing skills
Difficulty: Easy
Description: No need to grab yellow key, key post can be used to jump through window.

Map 12 - Rocket Jump
Discovered by: Stx-Vile (According to 1228PL11.TXT)
Demo: 1228PL11
Skills needed: Precise SR50 + timing
Difficulty: Hard
Description: Skips a large section of the map and one of the biggest time savers in plutonia.
This is done without rocket jump in 30pl1316, not sure how viable that is non-TAS.

Map 12 - Rocket Jump + Arch-Vile Jump + Death exit
Discovered by: Sedlo
Demo: pl12-006
Skills needed:
Difficulty: Extremely difficult
Description: I don't know of a combo of tricks more impressive than this, watch it if you haven't.

Map 13 - Double glide
Discovered by: ???
Demo: 30pl1316
Skills needed: Extreme glide skills + luck.
Difficulty: Extremly difficulty\TAS only.
Description: North to south and south to north glide. While the first one is not too hard,
there will be a baron in a small space and the only way out is a south to north glide.
Quick south to north glides are close to impossible, even without the baron it is extremely difficult to do
it in a time that would actually save time compared to normal route. The only use for this trick
would be TAS and maybe episode run, since you get BFG on map 11 which you can use to clear the baron.

Map 14 - SR50 trick\Keygrab
Discovered by: Stx-Vile (according to pl14-021.txt,1228pl11.txt)
Demo: pl14-021
Skills needed: Precise SR50
Difficulty: Hard
Description: Grab yellow key without having to raise ledges.
Also requires a specific angle and position.

Map 16 - Arch-Vile Jump
Discovered by: Vincent Catalaa (According to Pl16-024.txt)
Demo: Pl16-024 or pp16-020
Skills needed: Timing
Difficulty: Medium
Description: Skip a section of the map by using arch-vile attack to boost you up to exit teleporter.

Map 17 - Suicide exit
Discovered by: Vincent Catalaa (earliest demo to use trick)
Demo: PL17-009 or pl17-008
Skills needed: Timing
Difficulty: Easy
Description: Use rocket on the wall to kill yourself and let corpse slide onto the exit.

Map 18 - Arch-Vile Jump
Discovered by: Istvan Pataki (according to pl18-014.txt)
Demo: pl18-022 or pl18-006
Skills needed: Timing
Difficulty: Hard
Description: Skips whole map by using arch-vile to boost to exit.
This arch-vile jump is more difficult than the map 16 one, since you need to be running
towards the exit platform as he attacks and before you hit the edge of the platform.

Map 19 - Glide
Discovered by: ??? (Cack_handed? earliest demo I think from 2006, before TAS run by A.N.)
Demo: pl19-021
Skills needed: Standard gliding skills
Difficulty: Medium
Description: West to east guidedless glide, though any direction is available.

Map 21 - Glide
Discovered by: Zvonimir Buzanic (you? according to pl21-008.txt)
Demo: pl21-008 or pl21-004
Skills needed: Standard gliding skills
Difficulty: Medium
Description: West to east guided glide, one of the easier glides, though aracnothron might hit you.
Shortest map in plutonia using this glide, so it skips just about everything.

Map 22 - Switch trick
Discovered by: Anders (according to pl22-209.txt)
Demo: pl22-111 (fastest demo to use it)
Skills needed: None
Difficulty: Easy
Description: Skips having to press yellow key switch to lift the red bars.
Even though you have to pick up all keys, this trick saves a lot of time because the switch is quite far away
and you would have to run all the way back.

Map 23 - Glide
Discovered by: ??? (Perhaps A.N.)
Demo: 30pl1316
Skills needed: Standard gliding skills
Difficulty: Medium
Description: West to east guided glide, also an easy glide, but lots of monsters in the area can disturb you.
Trying to clear too many monsters first would make this trick slower than the normal route.
But, this does skip 2 arch viles as well.

Map 24 - Arch-Vile Jump
Discovered by: Selim Benabdelkhalek? (This might be wrong, as who discovered is not mentioned in the txt as far as I can see, pl25-057)
Demo: pl24-017 (fastest demo to use it)
Skills needed: Timing
Difficulty: Medium
Description: Skips waiting for elevator.
The elevator here is quite slow, and you start the map with megasphere and there is a lot of health afterwards too.

Map 24 - Arch-Vile Jump
Discovered by: Sedlo (I assume this is Sedlo since only 1 demo uses this trick besides TAS)
Demo: pl24-017
Skills needed: Timing and luck.
Difficulty: Extremely difficult
Description: Skips half the map by using arch-vile boost over to the exit.
Very difficult to get arch vile to attack from the right position and get the momentum needed to reach the exit.

Map 24 - Rocket Jump
Discovered by: Anders (according to pl24-041.txt)
Demo: pl24-038 (fastest demo to use it, also pl24-041 desynced for me)
Skills needed: Timing and luck
Difficulty: Very hard
Description: Skips grabbing blue key, very dangerous because of cyberdemon.
This trick might be possible in episode\movie run with some practice, it saves about 10 seconds.

Map 25 - SR50 trick
Discovered by: ??? (I have no idea)
Demo: pl25-018 (fastest demo, listing first demo for 3 tricks on the same map was difficult)
Skills needed: SR50
Difficulty: Easy
Description: Small skip to reach switch faster.

Map 25 - Glide
Discovered by: gggmork (First demo with this trick is the TAS, 30pl1316.txt: "Thanks to gggmork for the glide idea and to xepop for xdre.")
Demo: pl25-018
Skills needed: Standard gliding skills
Difficulty: Easy
Description: Skips a room by doing a west to east guided glide on a pillar.
Doing the glide activates some trigger allowing you to use the teleporter to the next area without having to hit 4-5 switches.

Map 25 - Rocket Jump
Discovered by: ??? (Vincent Catalaa? First demo to use it is pl25-046 I think)
Demo: pl25-018
Skills needed: Precise SR50 + timing
Difficulty: Hard
Description: Skips a large section of the map by doing a rocket jump onto the exit.

Map 26 - Trigger\linedef skip or glide
Discovered by: A.N.? (Another TAS only trick,so I assume A.N.)
Demo: 30pl1316
Skills needed: ???
Difficulty: Extremely difficult
Description: Two possibilities to save time on the crusher by the red key.
You can glide on the sides of the crusher, or you can run across the linedef quick enough to skip it,
which probably requires rocket boost.

Map 27 - Rocket Jump
Discovered by: A.N.? (Another TAS only trick,so I assume A.N.)
Demo: 30pl1316
Skills needed: ???
Difficulty: TAS only
Description: Skip to the first teleporter, I don't think this has any use outside TAS.

Map 27 - Window Jump
Discovered by: Adam Hegyi (according to pn27-050.txt)
Demo: pn27-050
Skills needed: Very precise strafing skills
Difficulty: Very hard
Description: Skips having to grab the yellow key.

Map 28 - Trigger\linedef skip
Discovered by: Ryback (according to 30pl1316.txt: "4 seconds were saved thanks to Ryback for the linedef skip idea."
Demo: 30pl1316 or pl28-131 (DSDA)
Skills needed: Precise SR50
Difficulty: Hard
Description: SR50 across a linedef to avoid triggering blue key trap.
A second option used in 30pl2523 is to trigger the trap without going over it,
and then going back and lowering the wall which will prevent it from being triggered again.
