Cybers 2003

Post by fish »

Hi Guys,

I know, I know -- I'm supposed to have retired, right? I did
but I am still excited about the cyber awards 2003. It's hard
to tell who else is feeling it because the front page seems
largely outdated and I haven't seen a post on the forums. So
I decided to start my own!

To get the discussion going here is a small list of nominations
that I came up with. I watched a small batch of demos but mostly relied on my memory which is quickly fading. You'll notice a bunch of big ones missing. Thats because I either can't remember it or it was after the September 2003 update. I didn't sift through the demos in incoming. Please fill me in... :)

One more thing. I tried to assign the demo(s) to the most
appropriate cat. For example, t4m62924 is a tyson demo, of
course. Overall I think it's more impressive for it's
technical achievement then anything else. To me it's a
thirty minute first exit. A hard one though. :)

Max:
e2m1-125, lv04-059, lv11-205

Pacifist:
p1m6-144

Technical:
t4m62924, t2f8-720, p1m7-146, tn02-236, tn08-335

Coop:
cm07-027, ac03-059, ac07-140

Trick:
ep30-204, hr09-103, m227-028, m209-059

Best New Player:
Eugene Kapustin

hall of fame cyber award:
Doug 'Opulent' Merrill for his well-rounded contributions to every aspect of the demo community: SDA and TAS demo websites, great pwads website, doomworld demoforum moderator, contributions to many demopacks and a few CN submissions, wad playtester, and lastly all around nice guy who takes the time to answer newbie's questions when no one else can be bothered.

Other cats:
artistic, demo of the year, fastresp, movie, nmare, speed, tyson
best new player, most improved player, player of year,

Anthony Soto

well, that just sucks... better than a hdd failure though.
Fish: man, you're too kind; I try to do my part(well usually :)), but I don't think I deserve that.  I think you, Vile, AdamH., Method man, DooMerMan, Radek, and Grazza have done more this year -- instilling interest in demos and recordable wads as well as *shock* recording a lot too.  shoot, I'm probably forgetting someone or two...
oh, and Eugene, Torn, and Budko have been making only great stuff; which is more impressive from (relatively) new players.
still hole-filling this year, that's surprising in itself. :)

Fish: Unfortunately for me, t2f8-720 can't be voted on, since it's a misc demo *cries* I spent a while on it, but my reward is actually pulling it off ^_^

Lessee....um....when I check out some more demos, I'll probably make some sort of list as to what I think is good, buuut, right now, I'll just let you people wonder what I think is good ;)

Thanks for the suggestions Ocelot - keep them coming
guys!

Altima, why is your demo categorized as Misc? Because it's
fast? Still, it was a submitted demo right so it should be eligible to be nominated?

p1m6 would be a bad choice for pacifist. I'd be embarrassed if a run of mine at p1m6 won. I think vile would agree with me...p1m6 is basically the start, which is easy as falling off a log once you're in a rhythm, and the end, which is pure luck - you try something random, one in fifty times it works, hit the exit, look at the time. I don't know what better runs to point to off hand, I didn't watch any demos for seven or eight months this year, but I'm sure someone can think of some...vile, any you can think of?

Fish: See, the demo is -fast Tyson, which isn't an official category. Therefore, as far as I know, it can't be voted on.

Pacifist, the only one I know of that was done by me (that I can remember right off hand) is pp12-037, which is utter crap, so count me out for Pacifist. All the others I've done have been beaten already. I would say m227-028, but Sedlo has a :24 for it. But as for best trick, that's one nomination...

UV-speed, can't forget the battle with DooMerMan that I had over hr02, which he won out on in the end with...what, :42 or something? Of course, there is always Ocelot's e3m5. Also there is OgreSlayR's e1m8 speedrun, and Sedlo's e2m7. Oh yeah, there's Williamson's sub-2:00 lv17 speedrun ;) as well as his speedrun for pl31 (also a Pacifist....probably better to vote for this one under Pacifist than speed....hmm...). Lessee... *searching database as he types* I thought method_man's ev29 was good.

Max is another one I wanna run on about real quick. One that I know of that I did was the pl30 max in 1:07, and then there's my ev31-654, but I don't think that ev31 is Cyber-worthy =) ...and I just noticed, I did the only Plutonia max in 2003 o.o *gasps!* Outside of my stuff that I actually remember (I don't even keep up with my OWN shit anymore =P), Andy's lv04 in :59 is definately worth mentioning, as well as Vile's lv11-205. Also we have Vile's e2m9-049, and DOOMMANN's e3m9. Hm...I don't really see anything incredible in the Evolution set, but maybe something in there by Radek is worth watching. And like I said, I think I had the only max for Plutonia. Checking the PWADs, I see some stuff in AV, being Radek's av32 in particular, although there's a lot of stuff for AV since it was only released for the COMPET-N this year =) That's all for now, more later.

By the way, my mouse is a piece of shit....

E3m5 does not qualify since it's a 2004 demo.
Other worthy candidates than the ones you mentioned are probably lv10-025 and lv28-040.

blah, my lv17 was nothing special, nothing to compete with lv10 for sure :). I think Sedlo told me in privmsg he'd beaten it but didn't think his demo was good enough to upload, a lower 1:5x...might be wrong, but I think it was lv17. good call on pp25, vile, that deserves to be in the running.

oh, one pacifist i'm quite proud of that probably slipped under a lot of people's radar is my MM1 MAP02 run, mm02p133...particularly compared to mm02p842 it makes a perfect example of the difference between old-school and new-school pacifist running (even though 8:42 was a new demo too). hehe.

I think one reason no one has mentioned it is because it's already been done and was nominated for Pacifist last year (not Vile's but the other one). Either that, or no one thought about it =P

oh I just noticed that best coop player got squeezed in 2002 and also in 2003. It's understandable... not much players :)
This year seen many cz players doing some coop tho...

Thats why coop max, speed and movie would be cool :)

Lifetime achievement is a "once in a lifetime" thing. Anders and I already received it, so please don't nominate us again, you're taking away votes from people who deserve it.

I spotted that too, and wasn't fooled by it. If AdamH made all these lists by hand, then I think they are impressively accurate - that was the only oddity that I noticed.

BTW, I accidentally submitted a blank form by pressing Return while viewing the nominations page/form. I hope that doesn't mean that my real nominations will be rejected when I submit them (probably in the next 24 hours).

Angus: Right. I'll fix that as soon as I get home.

Grazza: The single player were done from the database (evidence of that is that the p1m7 link is also borked in the DB) with some scripting. Coop was done by hand.
I see one blank entry in the votes, I'll remove that IP from the log (otherwise you can't vote from the same IP again).

11 votes so far... Remember, the deadline is FRIDAY, so get in those votes real quick.

Sorry, this comes too late for the Cybers, but there are two more Alien Vendetta tricks:

- av27-400 (switch from below trick by stx-Vile)
- ac25-123 (rocket push from player's rocket launcher on monster (very imaginative!!!), not from Cybie as shown in ap25-133, demo by Erik and method_man)

I noticed a couple of errors:

1) In the shortlist, one of the Tyson nominees is listed as ty291954. This should be ty291854.

2) In the file cyber2003.zip, the wrong 30uv by Radek Pecka is included (it should be 30uv2609, and not 30uv2659). Presumably this also affects the individual packs for the "movie" and "best demo" categories, but I haven't checked those.

Hmpf. Your exaggerating to annoying degrees mr :}

Rybacks run is a one of a kind. It woulda been a decent candidate for techincal merit imo, but as best movie it dosn't stand a chanse. Rewatch Ocelots 0711nm01. The only movie competing with that is Hennings full game run. Just cus its made keys only dosn't make it better. It just means the process took longer because of the limmitations. In the end you learn what stuff to do to compensate for lack of manvuerability and it becomes a rehearsed patheren just like everything else.

Mentioned it on doomworld already under the relevant topic, but its peculiar to see viles e2m1 missing :\\

Radek: .5 cyber
Shouldn't that be 1.5 (best movie and a tie for best Tyson)?

So many good players, and so few cybers to go around...

The fact that Radek got 11 nominations shows that his work is widely appreciated. Presumably he got quite a number of 2nd places (like Vile last year, I'd imagine).

Grazza's right, I skipped one of Radek's in 2003. That means he got 1.5 cybers in 2003 and 2.5 cybers overall.

I don't think Radek is underrated. It just relates back to the types of demos he does. Not a a lot of showstoppers but continual improvements on certain sets of maps. t2m2 is a prime example where every year it seems like a few seconds are shaved off. It's easy to give a nomination to a demo like this but when it comes time to give an award out you wonder...what will I see next year??

Each incremental demo is nice but never blows you away because the previous demo was only a few seconds slower. Ocelot on the other hand works on only a couple of demos a year. Oce, I think, holds onto a lot of his exits even if they are records. So it's got that "blow you away" factor much more.

Anyways, their must be some majority out there liking Radek for him to win best movie this year... ;D

Yep - to my knowledge, Oce, Sedlo and AdamH all have record runs they haven't released.
