Accessing the Competn FTP archive

Post by myk »

I had heard reports from some people (at least one at the Doomworld Forums) of not being able to access competn, but I had thought they were just user issues.

Apparently not.

Unless the archive is down right now and has been so for a few days, then the server is blocking off some IPs and some people can't access it. I can't get access, using either FTP or HTTP, from either home or work. I'll see if I can use a proxy from some other country, but still... it kind of sucks that people try to download COMPET-N demos, and they can't.

I can download OK from both ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002 and http://competn.doom2.net so either this is an intermittent issue, or user-dependent (as you suggest).

I was aware that the FTP hasn't been accepting uploads (and hasn't been for about 2 months), but haven't experienced any downloading problems (then again, there hasn't been much to download recently, for obvious reasons).

I had noticed at #nightmare2 that Radek could acess the archive, so it seemed user-dependent. Now it works for me, either because my IP changed or after whatever was getting in the way got fixed or removed.

Let's hope there's at least one update this year...

There will be an update this week. You can count on it.

I can't believe my eyes. Btw, Adam, you should include in the update c-n demos from other places.

Hi, I confirm problems to DL demos. Though, I was able to DL demos, with some little inconveniences.

Hi, Eugene!

BTW, don't you know a person, who owns a mailbox 'candide' on the same mailserver, that hosts you mailbox?

You can always download demos via HTTP:

http://competn.doom2.net/pub/compet-n/

FTP is only needed for uploads.

Awesome update Adam! I found a couple of table errors. Don't mean to innundate you after that huge update so when you get to it.

Xit did a map 26 tnt tyson demo et262238, but it still says none yet.
There's still no spot in the table for the map07 pacifist that Drew did.

The fullzip for the update doesn't include the pwad demos.

Also, the file et02-855.zip "does not appear to be a valid archive". I had got this error when I tried to download it from /incoming too.

I was trying to access some of the files that were up after the update and still can't access the competn archive. So being the aformentioned persion from the doomworld forums I thought I'd say something here. Me, and all my friends (including someone from newzealand) are unable to access competn.doom2.net either using http or ftp. I have also tried using various proxy servers but all the servers are unable to find the site as well. I did a manual dns lookup of the site and got an IP address but I still timeout when I try to connect from that.

In short, this is most annoying.

Amazing I just figured out a solution. If i manually lookup the ip address and then connect using ftp from it like ftp://65.192.90.195:8002 so through a proxy then it works. Cumbersome but it works  :)

150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for m221-216.zip
Upload
552 Transfer aborted.  Disk quota exceeded

Seems we have our old problem again. I've send my corrupted demos to AdamH. Hope he checks mailbox sometimes.

You have the same issue I have, which is that our IPs are in a banned range. A web-based proxy is one very convenient way to download files from the archive.

Sounds like a good work-around, Myk.
I uploaded Eugene's MM2 demos.  I hope that's okay.
http://competn.doom2.net/incoming/compet-n/pwads/
I would assume the disk quota is still busted.

I fixed the zipfile and re-uploaded it.

Talking of Xit, I noticed that he missed the secret in his new ps01-103.
